Has anyone heard of/been to Dalo’s Kitchen (supposedly located between Williams & Skidmore) and can vouch?

It's Ethiopian, and outside of a single comment on a food site, I can't find any information about them. I guess I could try ride around the neighborhood on my bike, but I wanted to see if anybody has checked it out.

From the infamous Goner Records message board:

fierydrunk: OK, I heard there is a great new Ethiopian place on N. Williams and Skidmore in those nondescript, windowless bldgs that run the block called Dalo's or something that has 4 vegetarian dishes and injera for $4.99!!!!

$4.99! Supposedly it is enough to feed two people. Get there before they learn enough to change their pricing.

joe danger: fiery- where did you hear 4.99? i go there often with elizabeth, and it's always been 8.99 for the two person HUGE meal! i like it. it's your standard ethiopean food.

so far the times i've gone in they've been playing
1. fela kuti (multiple times)
2. john coltrane
3. jimi hendrix.

i stand by the place.

So I guess it exists, and rock'n'roll types like to eat there.

Is this place only Vegetarian? I dig the lentils, chickpeas, etc., but the braised lamb, beef and chicken dishes (I love the dish with chicken on the bone with hard-boiled egg) are my favorite.

I've heard excellent things about it from multiple people but haven't made it there myself.

I live just 2 blocks away. Dalo's is great, although their menu is limited. No lamb, for example. However, it's an excellent value and consistently delicious! Best injera in town, too.

I've been to Dalo's a bunch and have always enjoyed it.

The address is 4134 N Vancouver Ave. According to the menu I have their hours are: M-Sat 11am-8pm, closed sunday.

They recently added a bunch of seating, I think they have a pretty loyal clientele and everytime I'm in there I see a group or two of people who obviously haven't been in yet. For those who go for the first time: it is seat yourself and they aren't in any rush, relax.

Whenever I go it is with my vegetarian friend (who loves the place) so I've only had the veg platter. That's cool with me though, because it's really good. And only 8.99 for the large which could easily feed 3. Of course, it's mostly the injera that fills you up, but that's the style.

My favorite veg dish is the Atkilt, which is a garlic-y mix of vegetables. Kay misir (spicy lentils) is also a favorite.

Given that the pace is so relaxed at Dalo's, I always wonder about the "kitchen." It is partitioned off by some screens, so if there where anything going you'd hear it. Oddly, you don't hear anything. I'm thinking that all the food is cooked in advance and kept on a steam table or warmed up some other way...I also wonder about the injera, if it is cooked to order or if someone is just turning them out and keeping them warm. However it is done, it works for them: the food is very consistent.

I agree that Dalo's is very consistent and a good value. I've had both meat dishes and veggie ones and always flavorful, filling, and steaming hot.

The only slightly negative experience I had was going there for lunch once, when the service was incredibly slow despite the dining room not being that full. During evenings though I've never had a long wait for the food to arrive.

Good point about the quietness of the place! Sometimes I've heard background instrumental African music in the background, but other times dead quiet. Still, not a lot of noise from behind the screens. I'd never thought about that until reading the comments above though.

I think some of their dishes lack the depth that similar dishes have at Queen of Sheba, but with no wait and very affordable dishes, I enjoy Dalo now and then for a very quick, cheap, and casual dinner.
