Has anyone tried buying all the peripherals (a touch screen monitor, a computer, printer, card swipe etc) and the software and manually building a POS system? Is it cheaper than buying a package of both HW and SW? The minimum it cost to buy a package is 3000$ . HW is not available in the shops like Fry's or Costco or Sam's Club. But is available thru HP, Dell etc.
How are the Microsoft POS software and the Quickbooks POS softwares, I think they come on the HP and Dell POS systems?
Any local dealers you recommend? Or details of how you purchased one.

I know Siam Societ has and thinks buying separately is a good idea. A touch screen is only $300-$500 bought online. And from what I understand, a lot of the all-in-ones like used for Micros are pretty weak-ass PCs.

Hi,
Are any of you using MICROS POS system? Does the SW come loaded on the system and is it transferrable license? Can other software be installed on a MICROS?
Do you know anyone who can setup a Micros system or knows about the system well?
Thank You
SP

Micros has really strict rules about using their software.
We went with Dinerware and they've been FANTASTIC. They have a local service rep who's been really good and the software is very intuitive and ends up costing about 1/3rd Micros, maybe even less if you use your own equipment.

Oh, also I would recommend another site called gci-store.com. They seem to carry a more specific range of pos systems.

Since this is an old thread I was wondering if anyone had any (2011, not 2007) advice/recommendation for a simple POS system?
It would be for a bar that is opening this summer. Thank you.

I still say Dinerware, though I just helped a place open with a cheaper POS option:
http://www.businesso...com/pointofsale
It's not the easiest system to setup, but it works, the hardware and software is relatively cheap, and their support options are very cheap. Dinerware is still only mid-priced, though, so if you can pay a bit more, it's probably worth it and the evidence is...evident since about every new restaurant in Portland now buys Dinerware.

For a smaller operation, I'm wondering if something like Square would fit a need.

@ExtraMSG Thanks, I'll look into it.
@polloelastico We looked into this, and other iPad POS systems, but it wasn't exactly what we needed. It's a pretty cool feature, surprised more carts aren't using it.

Does anyone have experience or can comment on the iPad based POS Lavu with Zephyr Hardware?
The price seems attractive compared to traditional systems like Aloha, Micros, Dinerware, etc...
Seems like the tablet based systems have come a long way with proper receipt printers, cash drawers, kitchen printers, dedicated stands, food-service specific user interface, etc...
Thanks.
