Going on a date with a vegetarian.  Typically do the usual suspect Indian buffets for lunch and not paid attention to vegetarian items at Bollywood and Bombay Cricket Club.  Any suggestions in Portland or SW hills / as far out as Hillsboro.

OT, years ago I had the best Indian food deal in PDX (it is a mystery to me why Portland has so many gr8 hamburgers, wood fired pizza / thai on every block but comparatively few seafood and non thai ethnic restaurants) an Indian postdoc who would cook for us.  Learned a couple of interesting things.  Indian lunch buffets are close to non existent in India and somewhat offensive to the culture of gracious hosting.  Also the postdoc would not be seated during the meal but instead would hover over us serving individual dishes and talking while he served us.  Claimed that was the way his mother served guests too.  Interesting cultural difference.

In Vancouver, WA there's a place that specializes in South Indian cuisine:

ABHIRUCHI INDIAN CUISINE
NE Chkalov Dr

It's delicious.

I had a customer today tell me she's here to help a friend design a new Indian restaurant called Maruti. It's 100% vegetarian. The have a place in Mt Shasta of the same name they closed and relocating here. They are taking over the Bombay Cricket Club on Hawthorne and plan to open within 6 weeks.

and they get outstanding reviews on Yelp:

I'm not a fan of Bollywood Theater. For me, it's overhyped for what it is.

There's a place on NW 23rd called Siri, which is relatively new (well, the owners are new at least). I had a nice lamb curry there, but cannot speak for the vegetarian dishes.

There's an Abhiruchi in Beaverton as well near Murray Rd.  I prefer the Vancouver branch (the owner will usually make certain food adjustments on request such as a drier masala and more heat), but it's still a good option.

Indian vegetarian in the heart of SE? It'll never fly. (I kid, I kid--I fervently wish for their success.)

Bollywood Theater uses fresh ingredients and avoids overcooking things, which is more than most Indian restaurants will ever be accused of. Plus the food shop might be fun on a date. Just sayin'

Probably too late, but since it got bumped...

I like East India Company a lot. Quieter and a bit more upscale than many options; might be nice for a date. Now that I think about it, EIC is probably the only Indian place I would really consider in town for a "nice" dinner (RIP Plainfield's). While I personally enjoy their meat dishes, I've been there with vegetarians and found plenty of options.

East India Company

Note: service can be slow by American standards, but I rather like it. Plenty of time to chat if the date is going well, but maybe awkward if it isn't.

According to Eater, Maruti is now open. Here's their website:

Looks promising.
