FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Pacific Pie NW Opens This Week
December 2, 2013 – Portland, OR – Pacific Pie opens its second location on Thursday, December 5th, welcoming holiday shoppers and those who were cheated out of a decadent Thanksgiving pie experience. Undeterred by an unprecedentedly busy pie season, construction delays, surprise fire marshal requirements and even broken bones, owners Sarah Curtis-Fawley and Chris Powell are delighted to finally bring their handcrafted sweet and savory Aussie-inspired pies to Portland’s west side. (Chris’ arm is mending nicely.)
For the new bakery/restaurant, Sarah and Chris worked with retail design firm Vizwerks to create a bigger and bolder Pacific Pie, bathed in milk chocolate walls and accented with stainless steel. Bark-brown leather banquettes line the L-shaped space and offer seating for 62. And yet Pacific Pie does not forget its roots. On the back wall, squares of punctured sheet metal in looping circles represent a community gathering around the table, reminiscent of Aboriginal artwork. Near the bar, an early 20th century map of the Pacific Ocean shows the voyage passages between Australia and America.
And then of course, there’s that homey, buttery aroma wafting from the ovens. Pacific Pie will offer the same menu as its flagship SE 7th Ave. store, with a wide selection of handmade savory hand pies, pasties and sweet pies for dining in or taking home. The 12-seat bar is an ideal location for watching the Timbers (or your favorite rugby team) and enjoying one of the six local beers on tap. Jordan Felix of Multnomah Whiskey Library served as cocktail consultant, creating a few signature cocktails using local Distillery Row and imported spirits.
Irrespective of the new store, 2013 has proven to be a record-breaking year for Pacific Pie. Thanksgiving orders tripled from last year, with Zupan’s Markets selecting Pacific Pie as its exclusive pumpkin pie baker. The company now employs 67 people and makes wholesale deliveries as far as Seattle. What’s next for Sarah and Chris? It seems that all that’s left to do is to follow the instructions on the wall behind the bar: “Drink a pint. Eat a pie. And all is right in the world.”
