So, as the dust settles from "the bagel wars", does anyone make a "white" rye bagel?
Just happened upon this old thread while trying to find rye bagels in Portland. Did you ever find any? I brought back a dozen "true rye" bagels from Once Upon A Bagel in Chicago and they are gone now and I am very sad. By "true rye" I mean not pumpernickel, not made with wheat flour, has caraway seeds in the bagel not on top, and has a crust of corn meal on the bottom. Damn those bagels were good.

Bowery often has them but I don't think they're a regular menu item

I just sent a tweet to Bowery asking when they'll have them next. Will post back here if they answer.

Mad Martian - Call Bowery and they will make a special order for you. Here's their twitter reply: "Ack! We just had them in March as monthly special. Probably several months before they're back. We could special order for you."
If you're on Twitter, then just reply to that convo & they'll hook you up!!
Their bagels freeze just fine if you have to buy more than a dozen. Just slice then stick in a ziploc and freeze. Toss frozen sliced bagel in toaster and they're great.

I am my father's daughter and in that capacity, am genetically unable to of toast a bagel. Freeze whole, put in toaster-oven at 200 (low) for 5-7 minutes, turn off toaster oven squeeze bagel to see if it's thawed, if not leave in turned-off toaster oven for a few more minutes. Slice. ; )
The Rye from Bowery are good.

Eva that is so funny. You must've cringed reading my "toast" comment. Sunday bagels & lox brunch at Grandma's every week growing up, and they always toasted the bagels for the kids. Guess I never grew out of it!
