I don't know if any of you followed this on Twitter, but I still say I could beat the record of 7. Just not sure if I want to gain another 5 lbs.

“Six! Six pies! Let’s go for seven!” a voice shouts over the top of the late-night crowd milling around the Hawthorne food cart pod. The contestants in “Pie Champ 2.0” are a picnic table full of bloated techies raising cash for Free Geek. But the pies they’re devouring—flaky, buttery-tasting, addiction-forming half-moons of goodness—those are the work of Gregg Abbott, the 30-year-old former RingSide valet that opened Whiffie’s Fried Pies (Southeast 12th Ave. and Hawthorne Blvd., twitter.com/whiffies, 8 pm-3 am Tuesday-Saturday) just a month ago. His housemade, empanadalike hand pies, whose innards range from salty-sweet pulled pork and “breakfast” bacon and eggs to molten sour lemon goo and tart, silky blueberries ($4 savory; $3 sweet pies), are the kind of epic drunk food you won’t regret the morning after. Hot but not greasy, his pies each get a quick dunk in rice bran oil to give ’em a clean, toothsome crunch.

And exposing Whiffies as a publicity whore.... ;)

Gregg Abbott, owner of the ridiculously addictive Whiffie’s Fried Pies (I’ve got a tasty profile of his sweet ‘n savory cart in tomorrow’s issue of WW, check it out) just called to let us know that he and Potato Champion’s Mike McKinnon have a special offer for World Naked Bike Ride participants late night this Saturday, June 13.

The two carts are giving away 50 free small cones of fries and 50 free sweet pies to the first 100 bikers who make it to their Southeast Hawthorne and 12th Avenue food cart pod after the WNBR late Saturday night very, very early Sunday morning—one goodie per person, first come first serve.

I hung out talking to Greg of Whiffies and Mike of Potato Champion for much too long last night about some potential cart locations coming up, among other things. Got to taste a vegan coconut custard Whiffies is developing. It was really delicious and creamy. He's got a chocolate in the works, too. Apparently he's going to test them tonight. Hopefully they'll be rolled out this weekend. I find his fruit pies tend to be a little jammy. I prefer the savory pies. But these custards might change my mind.

So the brand new chocolate creme pie at Whiffies.....is like eating the chocolate pudding snack pack from heaven, that just happens to be in a fried pie. I split one with a friend last night, it was the best I'd had yet. I swear the pie shell is better every time I try it, too.
yeah, I'm vegan.

I've never had cooked durian. Does it still smell like a corpse after being cooked?

I had the pleasure of eating one of the durian pies last night - it was tasty on the inside, but I had a bit of the raw filling on the side and it truly smelled like way-past-the-point-of-rotten fruit.

The burps afterwards are also something serious.

I had a durian pie last night as well. I did not get to sample the raw filling (for which I think I should probably be thankful) but found the cooked pie to be very tasty. The filling had a pleasantly sweet, fruity flavor which I can't really describe. Maybe a bit like vanilla and pineapple, but that's really not doing it justice. Anyway, it was quite delicious. My only complaint was that the filling was a bit runny, making it virtually impossible to eat without getting the goop all over the place. If they could thicken it up and make it a bit more custardy, I think they might have a real hit on their hands.

Whiffie's has great fillings, as a devotee of the fried pie, I found the marionbberry just right, but I can see how some would think it too jammy. The coconut cream and double chocolate cream were smooth, no weird textures or tastes, jsut perfect. I've gotta gripe, though, change the damn oil in the fryers. We went at 8:30 or so Friday, and the crusts were on the verge of rancid. I don't think I'd notice with a snootful at 1 AM, but the oil was staggering to an untimely demise.

On the other hand, the oil would enhance a durian pie.

Anyone else know of other fried fruit piex in the NW? There's a doughnut shop in Coos Bay that turns out a fine lemon, cherry, or apple, but havent' seen them elsewhere.

Russell Street BBQ often has fried pies on their dessert list.

Whiffles now has "belly timber" designed? pies which cost a dollar more. They had two selections, I had the roasted corn and bone marrow pie which was really really good.

I REALLY wanted to try that pie when I was there on Wed. alas I was with a vegetarian so it was the chard with golden raisins for me...
This was my first time FINALLY getting a whiffie. The crust was nice a bit crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside.
The chard was well cooked and the golden raisins were a nice texture and flavor extra.

It was good, but I know the roasted corn and bone marrow would have blown it out of the water.

I had the corn and marrow pie last night too. Damn tasty. The first two Belly Timber pies I saw didn't sound very appealing, but this was awesome. The corn is fresh and crunchy and the marrow sweet and delicious.

El Brasero recently opened a taqueria in the old El Michoacano spot at 182nd & Division. The owner was there doing the cooking when I went by. Lamb barbacoa flautas. Yum. They're also going to put in a churro cart between them and Whiffies in the next month.

I think everyone knew this day was coming.

Portland's best unnecessarily punctuated food cart has closed its doors. Portland Food Carts reports that Yarp?!, the veggie-friendly, Italian-influenced cart on SE Hawthorne and 12th, shuttered for good last week. Co-owner Jeremy Frazee wrote earlier this year that the Yarp-ers were facing financial difficulty; he and business partner Chad decided to go separate ways. Says Jeremy on PFC's message boards:

Quote

Chad, my previous business partner, is in the process of putting together another food cart, so the Yarp?! legacy will live on, just without its initial creator. The reasons behind our closure were partly financially based, but also because of growing differences between the key players.

And, the opening that Yarp?! left goes to...'ETTA!!

From PFC on FB:

Quote

Confirmed. Violetta's rolling 'Etta truck will become a fixture at Cartopia on the weekends. Named one of the top 10 burgers in Portland. So excited. Cartopia is at SE 12th and Hawthorne and is the premier evening and late night pod with 6 carts.

They are gonna kill it in that location! Gotta get a burger when they roll on in there...
