I thought we had a pie thread somewhere, but I can't find it. However, to get things re-started until I do...

That shouldn't stop you from taking an hour on March 14 to meditate on the nature of pi, while enjoying a slice of pie. Here are a few Portland pie places to get your pie on.

Sweet:

Random Order Coffeehouse
Bipartisan Cafe
Half & Half

Savory:

Immortal Pie and Larder
Pacific Pie Company
Whiffies

Saraveza is supposed to have good pies, too. You'd think with my obsession with them in New Zealand I'd have been to every savory pie shop in town, but it doesn't appear to be the case, now, does it? Maybe I love pies if they are convenient, but I don't go out of my way for them. I do make the effort for that chicken pot pie at Spints, though. I've had that one several times and enjoy it more each time.

Best regards,

Amanda

Yeah, as we all know I used to work there, but seriously why does Kris always get overlooked locally??! Her customers love her product and she has been making and selling these awesome tarts for 4 or 5 years now!

I like the hand pies -- savory and sweet -- at Ladybug Organic Cafe in St. Johns. Also just had awesome cherry pie from The Sugar Cube.

And speaking of Pi Day, Serious Eats is sponsoring a Pi Day Pie competition. The prize? $314, natch.

It's on SE Washington at about 2nd or 3rd, I think. It's in a very industrial area of town. I think there's only a sandwich board sign or something like that to let you know it's there.

Best regards,

Actually, the Caltech team cheer was Beaver Fever, snatch it up! Pi Time was certainly celebrated (3:14 on 3/14) but not nearly as much as the Negative Time Power Hour (2am on the autumn day when Daylight Savings ends).

Shameless plug #2: I'm a finalist in the previously mentioned Serious Eats pie contest!

Check 'em out!
http://www.seriouseats.com/2010/03/vote-fo...ke-off-pie.html
You do have to have a Serious Eats account in order to vote, but chances are, most of you foodies already have one. And if not, it's free and painless to sign up.

And, just for the record, mine is Avocado's Number, a delightfully refreshing pie that might remind of you the wonderful avocado smoothies of Pho Van and other local purveyors of avocado sweet drinks. I'm not saying you *have* to vote for me, but wouldn't it do Portland proud to have one of its own as the Pi Day champ? :)

awesome, thanks, all!

And just to get the topic back on track: I just heard that Meat A La Mode will be commercially producing savory pies pretty soon. I don't know if that means a storefront or selling through other businesses or what. I had her meat pies at Pietopia at the Farmer's Market last year and what I had was great. Though I was a little jealous that she got to the idea of a savory pie empire before I did.

A place called Immortal Pie and Larder just opened on Stark. I haven't tried it yet, but apparently they have some good savory pies. I'm hoping to check it out in the next week.
