Tasting Report

The panel questioned whether the lack of ambition on the part of Oregon’s pinot gris producers has cut into the value of the wines.

By ambition, I don’t mean the larding on of effects that people associate with expensive wines. I mean the other side of ambition; that is, the desire simply to make the best possible wine with what you have. And too often, it seemed to us, the producers were content to make wines that were decidedly ordinary. Not bad, just dull.

Of the 20 wines we tasted, 19 were labeled pinot gris. One, the 2008 Rock Point, No. 7 on our list, is called pinot grigio, after the Italian version of the same grape. It used to be that pinot gris was the only legal name for Oregon wines made from this grape, but that law was changed in 2007. Pinot grigio from northern Italy can be a delicious wine of character, but too often, it is dull. Let’s hope that Oregon pinot gris does not end up settling for the pinot grigio standard.

They liked:
2008 Willamette Valley from Anne Amie
2008 King Estate Signature Collection
2008 Bethel Heights
